How do you know if you have leaky gut? You may have mild to moderate gastrointestinal symptoms, such as such as bloating, gas, abnormal bowel movements, systemic.Hashimoto’s and accelerated brain degeneration In this seven-minute video, Dr. Kharrazian talks about how Hashimoto’s can accelerate brain degeneration. Leading Hashimoto's expert Dr. Datis Kharrazian provides 10 key things that every Hashimoto's hypothyroidism patient should know. A community and support resource for people with Hashimoto\'s Thyroiditis, or any other form of Thyroiditis, specifically geared to finding a way to cure.
Hashimoto's patients don't get better. Often times mainstream doctors don’t test for thyroid antibodies because it won’t change how they treat you with Hashimoto’s. The only solution they have is thyroid hormone replacement medication, but Hashimoto’s is more than a thyroid condition. It is an autoimmune disease. It is a pleasure to include Dr. Datis Kharrazian at Hypothyroid Mom. He is a leading expert in chronic illness, autoimmune disorders, and complex neurological disorders. Written by Dr. Datis Kharrazian, DHSc, DC, MS, MNeuro. Sci, FAACP, DACBN, DABCN, DIBAK, CNSThere is not one easy fix to successfully managing Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism, an autoimmune thyroid disease. As many people have learned the hard way, using thyroid hormones to get TSH within lab ranges certainly doesn’t guarantee a fix for most people, although it can help. Hashimoto’s is a multifaceted autoimmune condition that involves many mechanisms. To truly manage your autoimmune Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism, it’s important to understand the factors that contribute to it. Immune Reacting Fillers in Thyroid Hormone Replacement. Many thyroid supplements use corn starch or modified food starch that contains gluten. You need to make sure your thyroid hormones are gluten- free and free of corn starch if you react to corn. If your medication is in capsules make sure the capsules are gluten- free. Otherwise you could be taking hormones every day with dietary proteins that stimulate your autoimmunity. Taking Immune Enhancing Supplements. Nutritional supplements can either help or flare up your autoimmunity based on an individual’s T- helper dominance (whether you have a TH- 1 or TH- 2 dominance). Supplements such as echinacea, green tea, acai, astragalus, licorice, and a variety others can either help or aggravate autoimmunity depending on your dominance. If you are unaware of this you may be taking supplements that promote an autoimmune response. Please refer to Chapter Three of my thyroid book, Why Do I Still Have Thyroid Symptoms? When My Lab Tests Are Normal for more information and lists of supplements and herbs to be aware of. Fixating their focus on thyroid hormone replacement only. Many thyroid patients believe that if they could only figure out the perfect version of thyroid hormones (natural versus bio- identical or T3 versus T4) they can correct all of their symptoms. Unfortunately, Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism is a complex autoimmune disorder and thyroid hormone replacement is only one part of a large puzzle. However, if you need help learning more about thyroid hormone variations please refer to a previous newsletter article titled, Which thyroid hormone is right for you? Increasing Stress. Emotional stress activates pathways involving the inflammatory immune messengers IL- 6 and TH- 1. This activity creates an autoimmune flare- up. Unhealthy relationships with your spouse, co- workers, or friends can promote autoimmune flare- ups, as can a bad work environment, or other significant and chronic lifestyle stressors. If you have Hashimoto’s you need to create a healthy emotional environment for yourself. Bad personal relationships or poor work environments can be detrimental to Hashimoto’s patients. Not Strictly Gluten- Free. You are either 1. Choosing to eat gluten- free only when it is convenient is not a gluten- free diet. If you are not strict about your food being 1. Gluten is a major trigger for most Hashimoto’s patients and many cannot improve until they are 1. Not avoiding gluten cross- reactive foods. Although a strict gluten- free diet is a great place to start, if you are still eating foods that cross- react with gluten you may not recover well. Cross- reactive foods have proteins similar in structure to gluten and can trigger the same immune response as if you were eating gluten. The most commonly ignored cross- reactive food is milk (casein), followed by rice, corn, sesame, and gluten- free oats. In fact, it is best to avoid all grains and adopt a diet such as a Paleo diet when you have Hashimoto’s. Ignoring their brain health. The most common form of collateral damage in chronic Hashimoto’s patients is accelerated brain degeneration. Brain degeneration leads to identical symptoms of hypothyroidism, including fatigue and depression. I strongly suggest all thyroid patients become experts in identifying and supporting their brain health by referring to my second book, Why Isn’t My Brain Working? Ignoring insulin sugar spikes. Surges of insulin that follow eating or drinking something sugary or starchy (sweet coffee drinks, desserts, bowls of pasta or rice, bread, etc.) trigger the inflammatory TH- 1. Eating sweets throughout the day or overeating promotes insulin surges, which can be identified by symptoms of fatigue or sugar cravings immediately after eating. If you have those symptoms after eating it means you are not managing your insulin levels and your Hashimoto’s autoimmune response will be hard to tame. Missing meals. When blood sugar gets too low it raises the inflammatory messenger IL- 6 and promotes autoimmune flare- ups. Symptoms of low blood sugar are most noticeable between meals or if you skip meals and include shakiness, blurred vision, crankiness and irritability, and loss of function. If you feel a jump in your function and energy after eating it confirms your blood sugar was low—when your blood sugar is stable the only thing you should feel after eating is not hungry. Constantly skipping breakfast and missing meals will aggravate your autoimmune response and promote autoimmune flare- ups. Passive attitude. The passive patient does not question or challenge her doctor. If you are a passive Hashimoto’s patient and you do not take your health into your own hands you may not fare as well as the person who educates herself. The conventional model is based only on lowering your TSH with whatever thyroid medication your insurance plan or doctor prefers. Once TSH is within lab ranges, this model has nothing more to offer except to check your TSH once a year. It takes time and effort, but the thyroid patient who wants to feel better needs to roll up her sleeves and master the various mechanisms of Hashimoto’s. The more you understand Hashimoto’s the more likely you are to successfully manage your health. About Dr. Datis Kharrazian. If you have been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and don’t want to rely on taking synthetic or natural thyroid hormone for the rest of your life, then you might want to consider a natural treatment approach. While not everyone with this autoimmune thyroid condition is a candidate for natural treatment methods, one can’t argue that the conventional type of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis treatment procedures don’t do anything to help with the cause of this condition. This is unfortunate, as while it might be necessary for some people with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis to take thyroid hormone medication, most endocrinologists don’t do anything to address the cause of the condition. This is a big reason why many people search for a natural Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis treatment solution, as while the synthetic or natural thyroid hormone medication they are taking might help to manage their symptoms (although this isn’t always the case), more and more people are looking for a natural solution for their condition. This is true with many different conditions, including Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. Most patients are told by their endocrinologist that they can’t do anything to reverse the autoimmune process, and through conventional medical treatments this is absolutely true. However, many people can have their health restored back to normal through a natural treatment protocol. Getting To The Cause Of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. With Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, the malfunctioning thyroid gland is not the cause of the condition. In fact, while many people think of Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis as a “thyroid condition”, it really is an autoimmune condition that causes malfunction of the thyroid gland. So while some people do need to take thyroid hormone medication to manage the symptoms, one needs to keep in mind that this won’t do anything for the cause of the disorder. On the surface this might not seem like a big deal, until you do some research and discover that people with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis are more likely to develop other autoimmune conditions, such as type one diabetes, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and many other conditions. A big reason for this is because the conventional medical treatment for Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis does nothing to address the autoimmune response, which when you really think about it is absurd. After all, if someone has a compromised immune system, while it might be necessary to take medication if someone has low or depressed thyroid hormone levels, don’t you think it’s a good idea to try to do what is necessary to improve the health of the immune system? The problem is that it can actually be very challenging to accomplish this. Some people think they can simply take an immune system support formula, along with a “thyroid booster”, and this combination will help to manage or cure their condition. While the autoimmune response is what’s causing the body to attack its own thyroid gland, one needs to find out what’s causing the compromised immune system in the first place. There can be numerous factors which are responsible for the autoimmune response, such as stressed out adrenal glands, a leaky gut, an infection, estrogen dominance, etc. These are just some of the common areas of the body that can be causing or contributing to the development of an autoimmune condition. Incorporating A Natural Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis Treatment Protocol Just as a reminder, not everyone with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis is a candidate for natural treatment methods. Some people with this condition do need to take synthetic or natural thyroid hormone medication for the rest of their life. However, a competent natural endocrine doctor will be able to evaluate you and find out what is causing your condition, and let you know if you can be helped through natural treatment methods. Although some people with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis can’t have their health restored through a natural treatment protocol, most people can benefit from natural treatment methods. So for example, someone who has had elevated thyroid autoantibodies for many years might need to take thyroid hormone medication due to the amount of damage done to their thyroid gland. But even when this is the case they will want to correct any imbalances which lead to their autoimmune condition in the first place. So if the person has weakened adrenals, a leaky gut, or a chronic infection that is responsible for triggering the autoimmune response, then this needs to be addressed to help prevent other autoimmune conditions from developing in the future. Please Don’t Self- Treat Your Autoimmune Thyroid Condition. Let’s remember that with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis we’re dealing with a complex autoimmune thyroid condition. As a result, anyone who thinks they can restore their health by simply take a few supplements and/or herbal remedies will be extremely disappointed with the outcome. Once again, we are talking about an immune system condition, and this in turn is responsible for the malfunctioning thyroid gland. Nevertheless, some people will visit their local health food store and try to save money by treating the condition on their own. What almost always happens is that they don’t experience optimal results, and they end up wasting their money on nutritional supplements and herbs that are ineffective. And the reason for this is because while most people with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis have nutritional deficiencies, different people will require different nutritional supplements, as well as different dosages. Plus, there are other components that come into play when trying to restore one’s health. So do yourself a favor and consult with a competent natural healthcare professional who focuses on endocrine conditions, as they will evaluate your condition and give you the guidance you need to restore your health back to normal. And even if you need to continue taking thyroid hormone medication they can still help to improve the health of your immune system so that you won’t develop other autoimmune conditions in the future. Searching For A Qualified Natural Endocrine Doctor. While consulting with a competent natural healthcare professional who focuses on endocrine conditions is usually a wise thing to do, the problem is that it’s not easy to find a holistic doctor who has a lot of experience helping people with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. Most natural healthcare professionals don’t just focus on endocrine disorders, but see a wide variety of different conditions. This doesn’t necessarily mean they won’t be able to help someone with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, but since this is a complex condition, it is probably best to seek the advice of a natural doctor who deals primarily with endocrine conditions. These days telemedicine is becoming more and more common, as more and more healthcare professionals are helping people remotely. And so even if you can’t find someone who can help you locally, if you have already been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis and have received a physical examination, then it’s usually not a problem to work with a natural endocrine doctor remotely over the phone or through Skype. When I was personally diagnosed with an autoimmune thyroid condition it would have been nice to speak with someone face to face. But since there wasn’t anyone who practiced in my area who focused on treating endocrine disorders naturally, I ended up consulting with someone remotely. And to this day I have absolutely no regrets, as I received great results and had no problem with the long distance communication. So no matter where you live, there really isn’t a good excuse not to consult with a natural healthcare professional who focuses on endocrine conditions. When you think about it you really have nothing to lose, but have a lot to gain, as you just might find out that it’s possible to restore your health back to normal, and perhaps even get to the point where you no longer need to take thyroid hormone medication. If you would like to receive more information on how a natural Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis treatment protocol can help restore your health back to normal, then you will want to check out my free guide entitled “The 6 Steps on How To Treat Graves’ Disease and Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis through natural methods”. This guide contains 1. Here are some of my patients with thyroid and autoimmune thyroid conditions who have benefited from following a natural treatment protocol. I was concerned about an ongoing “mental fog” and forgetfulness I had – which is one of the symptoms of Hashimoto’s. I was having trouble losing weight and also felt very low in energy. Since following Dr. Osansky’s recommendations I have found that I have a greater sense of calm – something I didn’t expect from the treatment and changes in diet and lifestyle. In addition to getting my Hashimoto’s under control, I have enjoyed other health benefits as well. I no longer suffer from anemia, my Vitamin D levels are normal and my immune system is strong. My thyroid blood tests also improved. Although it’s a commitment and initial expense, it is completely worth it in the long run. Given the alternative (taking thyroid medication for the rest of your life), in my opinion it’s a no brainer. If you give a natural treatment protocol a fair chance you’d be surprised at how much more empowered you’ll feel about your illness and treating it. A natural treatment protocol is an effective solution that puts you in the driver’s seat when it comes to your health. Traditional methods do the exact opposite. Marie De. Simmone.
