Veganism is both the practice of abstaining from the use of animal products, particularly in diet, and an associated philosophy that rejects the commodity status of animals. There were regular discussions about it in the Vegetarian Messenger; it appears from the correspondence pages that many opponents of veganism came from within the vegetarian community. This lent support to the vegan position, although Gandhi himself drank goat's milk. This became the predominant view of the Vegetarian Society, which in 1. When the request was turned down, Donald Watson, secretary of the Leicester branch, set up a new quarterly newsletter in November 1. According to the latter, 7. Dietary vegans might use animal products in clothing (as leather, wool, and silk), toiletries and similar. Vegans reject the commodification of animals. Some of these are chemical compounds that can be derived from animal products, plants, or petrochemicals. Allantoin, lactic acid, retinol and squalene, for example, can be vegan. These products and their origins are not always included in the list of ingredients. They avoid certain vaccines; the flu vaccine, for example, is usually grown in hens' eggs, although an effective alternative, Flublok, is widely available in the United States. Non- vegan items acquired before they became vegan might be donated to charity or used until worn out. Some vegan clothes, in particular leather alternatives, are made of petroleum- based products, which has triggered criticism because of the environmental damage involved in their production. Ethical vegans avoid them on the premise that their production causes animal suffering and premature death. In egg production, most male chicks are culled because they do not lay eggs. Female calves are separated from their mothers within 2. Male calves are slaughtered at birth, sent for veal production, or reared for beef. Tofu comes in a variety of textures, depending on water content, from firm, medium firm, and extra firm for stews and stir- fries; to soft or silken for salad dressings, desserts, and shakes. Soy is also eaten in the form of tempeh and texturized vegetable protein (TVP); also known as textured soy protein (TSP), the latter is often used in pasta sauces. Almond milk is lower in dietary energy, carbohydrates and protein. Babies who are not breastfed may be fed commercial infant formula, normally based on cows' milk or soy. The latter is known as soy- based infant formula or SBIF. The recommendation is three or more servings a day of fruit (one of them high in vitamin C, such as citrus fruit, melon or strawberries); two or more of protein- rich legumes (such as soybeans, which can be consumed as soy milk, tofu or tempeh); five or more of whole grains (corn, barley, rice and wheat in products such as bread or cereal); and four or more of vegetables. My. Plate is divided into five groups: grains, vegetables, fruits, dairy products (or calcium- fortified soymilk), and protein. The protein includes meat, poultry, seafood, beans and peas, eggs, processed soy products, nuts and seeds. A raw vegan diet includes vegetables, fruits, nuts, grain and legume sprouts, seeds and sea vegetables. There are many variations of the diet, including fruitarianism. Vegans obtain all their protein from plants, omnivores usually a third, and ovo- lacto vegetarians half. Combinations that contain high amounts of all the essential amino acids include rice and beans, corn and beans, and hummus and whole- wheat pita. A deficiency can lead to megaloblastic anaemia and nerve damage. Vegetarians should thus take preventive measures to ensure adequate intake of this vitamin, including regular consumption of supplements containing B1. Plants not washed properly may contain B1. Animals obtain it by eating contaminated plants, other animals, or their own faeces, and become sources of B1. The mouth is another source, but in small amounts and possibly analogue (not biologically active). Tempeh, a fermented soybean food, is cited as another source, perhaps because of contamination during production. Ninety- nine percent of the body's calcium is stored in the bones and teeth. Plant sources include broccoli, turnip, bok choy and kale; the bioavailability of calcium in spinach is poor. The study found that vegans consuming at least 5. Without it bones can become thin and brittle; together with calcium it offers protection against osteoporosis. Vitamin D is produced in the body when ultraviolet rays from the sun hit the skin; outdoor exposure is needed because UVB radiation does not penetrate glass. It is present in salmon, tuna, mackerel and cod liver oil, with small amounts in cheese, egg yolks and beef liver, and in some mushrooms. People with little sun exposure may need supplements. The extent to which sun exposure is sufficient depends on the season, time of day, cloud and smog cover, skin melanin content, and whether sunscreen is worn. According to the National Institutes of Health, most people can obtain and store sufficient vitamin D from sunlight in the spring, summer and fall, even in the far north. They report that some researchers recommend 5–3. Tanning beds emitting 2–6% UVB radiation have a similar effect, though tanning is inadvisable. Cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) is synthesized in the skin after exposure to the sun, or consumed in the form of animal products; when produced industrially it is taken from lanolin in sheep's wool. Ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) is derived from ergosterol from UV- exposed mushrooms or yeast and is suitable for vegans. Conflicting studies have suggested that the two forms may or may not be bioequivalent. This is particularly true of anyone with hemochromatosis, a relatively common condition that can remain undiagnosed. Coffee and some herbal teas can inhibit iron absorption, as can spices that contain tannins (turmeric, coriander, chillies, and tamarind). The study concluded that there was no effect of vegan diets overall on all- cause mortality, cancer mortality, cerebrovascular disease or cardiovascular- disease- related mortality. The effects also disappeared when specific cancers were analysed. Vegans tend to be thinner, with lower serum cholesterol and lower blood pressure. Vegans might be at risk of low bone mineral density without supplements. They indicate that vegetarian diets may be more common among adolescents with eating disorders, but that its adoption may serve to camouflage a disorder rather than cause one. The Australian National Health and Medical Research Council similarly recognizes a well- planned vegan diet as viable for any age. Attention should be given to nutrient intake, particularly protein, vitamins B1. D, essential fatty acids, iron, zinc and calcium. It concluded: . Animal ingredients are ubiquitous because they are cheap. After animals are slaughtered for meat, the leftovers are put through the rendering process, and some of that material, particularly the fat, ends up in toiletries. Common ingredients include tallow in soap, and collagen- derived glycerine, used as a lubricant and humectant in many haircare products, moisturizers, shaving foams, soaps and toothpastes. Stearic acid is a common ingredient in face creams, shaving foam and shampoos; as with glycerine, it can be plant- based but is usually animal- derived. Lactic acid, an alpha- hydroxy acid derived from animal milk, is used in moisturizers, as is allantoin, from the comfrey plant or cows' urine, in shampoos, moisturizers and toothpaste. The British Vegan Society's sunflower logo and PETA's bunny logo mean the product is certified vegan, which includes no animal testing. The leaping- bunny logo signals no animal testing, but it might not be vegan. Its website contains a list of certified products. Most leather clothing is made from cows' and calves' skins, but the skin of sheep, goats, horses and pigs is also used. Less common skins include those from kangaroos, elephants, zebras, seals, crocodile and deer. Vegans regard the purchase of leather, particularly from cows, as financial support for the meat industry. Divisions within animal rights theory include the utilitarian, protectionist approach, which pursues improved conditions for animals, and rights- based abolitionism, which seeks to end human ownership of non- humans. Abolitionists argue that protectionism serves only to make the public feel that animal use can be morally unproblematic (the . Health Risks of Protein Drinks. We purchased 1. 5 protein powders and drinks mainly in the New York metro area or online and tested multiple samples of each for arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury. The results showed a considerable range, but levels in three products were of particular concern because consuming three servings a day could result in daily exposure to arsenic, cadmium, or lead exceeding the limits proposed by USP. For perspective about the relative risks exposure to those metals can pose, consider the agency's list of 2. Arsenic, lead, and mercury rank Nos. No. 7, based on risks to people around those sites. Robert Wright, M. D., an associate professor at Harvard Medical School, who is conducting research on the health effects of exposure to toxic metals, says, . He says that this is the result of a synergistic effect, meaning the effects of two toxic substances together can be even greater than those of the sum of the two, and not enough research has been done to determine whether that occurs from multiple exposures to even relatively low levels of those heavy metals. Avengers Workout: Build An Superhero Physique in Six Weeks. Grow Muscle, Get Stronger and Lean- Up. By the time you read this, you may have seen the new Avengers movie once or even a few times. By the looks of things (namely the physiques of the heroes in the film) muscle is back on the big screen - real life superheroes replete with well- defined muscle and brutal strength (sans the CGI Hulk of course). But wouldn’t it be nice to create your very own Avenger? Wouldn’t it be great to build a stronger, leaner and more muscled superhero body? Do you need a kick start training and eating plan to help get you there? Read on. Below are three distinct training programs and diet plans to help build strength and muscle, and then progressively get you leaner and more muscular by the end of six weeks. The beauty of the program is that it shifts gears every two weeks to keep boredom at bay and to ramp up progress for continued results. Research suggests that periodically changing up a training program is actually a good thing. It keeps the body guessing and progressing! It uses heavy weight, low reps and long rest periods. It is designed for recovery, growth and strength gains. Mind you, it is not a powerlifting program, but one that will prime your muscles for the extra work ahead. The second two- week period places greater volume on your body along with some heavy work. It is a transitional phase to prepare you for the next two weeks. Moderate weight along with a medium rep range and shortened rest periods will be on order. This phase combines strength with more volume for lean muscle gains. The final two weeks are dedicated to a higher rep range with a few techniques thrown in to keep the intensity high. You will also be working faster with supersets as well for time efficiency to really push yourself toward the finish line. This phase is almost entirely hypertrophy- focused. You will build more lean muscle while strength takes a temporary backseat. The first two weeks are not only all about recovery and growth, but also acts as a break- in period to get you in the habit of eating the right amounts of macronutrients at the correct times. Think of this time as building your discipline. The second phase builds on that discipline and provides you with a shift to start the lean down process. It picks up where phase one left off by cutting down on carbohydrate and increasing healthy fats. By the third phase you will be a fat- burning, muscle building machine able to utilize everything you eat for your specific goal. Give the program below a try for the next six weeks. Feel free to modify it according to your experience level. You can try three different options. Perform the program as is – six weeks then take a few days off and perform the six weeks all over again. Muscle and strength is the name of the game for the first two weeks. Perform the workouts over a four day period per week. Take a day off after two days of training. For example: Train Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday with Wednesday and the weekend off. Day 3 - Same as Day 1. Day 4 - Same as Day 2. Eat like the Hulk (Phase 1 Diet)Meal 1 - . Now it’s time to switch gears and turn our attention to packing on some serious muscle by building on our previous two weeks. The next two weeks will be similar in regards to adhering to the four days per week protocol, but now we will add in some volume and higher reps to really get the muscle to react. Day 3 - Same as Day 1. Day 4 - Same as Day 2. Rip it up like a superhero (Phase 2 Diet)Meal 1 - . Supersets, reduced rest periods and higher reps are on call for the next two weeks. Get ready to ramp up the intensity and really blow out the muscle – but don’t worry, after all is said and done it will be worth the time, effort and sacrifice for a leaner, more muscular physique. Note: Movements are paired according to convenience in a busy gym. A superset is when two exercises are performed back to back without rest. The rest period will be taken after each superset is performed. Day 3 - Same as Day 1. Day 4 - Same as Day 2. Look like an Ironman (Phase 3 Diet)Meal 1 - . Also, you may want to add in one or two cheat meals (preferably on the same day) on the weekend. Don’t go overboard, just eat enough to be satisfied and stop there. Don’t get off track too much and pig out. One more thing about off days – it’s not a green light to get lazy. Go out and enjoy other activities: basketball, swimming or anything you just plain enjoy doing actively. This will not only keep your interest up in being active it will also keep your metabolism humming along. If you want to include other supplements to the program in addition to whey protein, 5 grams of creatine and 2- 3 grams of beta- alanine can be added to both the pre and post workout meals. I know the company recommends listening to subliminals for a limited time only each day. But I have found keeping a few boomboxes on a loop in my home has helped me considerably. I'll play different CDs or MP3s in multiple rooms for several hours and change discs every so often when I become . The music is beautifully soothing and the water backgrounds are wonderful assets to keeping me (and sometimes guests too) relaxed. My home is a peaceful haven and that's just what I desire. The beauty of science is that is self- correcting. When a study is published, others get to scrutinize the data and methods. When issues arise, the scientific community gets to discuss and debate the findings, and when appropriate, challenge their veracity. Recently, I collaborated with some of the world’s top sports scientists on a letter to the editor about a study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, that showed an extremely large anabolic effect to consuming a supplement containing HMB+ATP. We wrote an extensive letter that covered our issues with the paper in hopes of seeking truth in science. However, we had to substantially cut down our response to conform to the journal’s policy of allowed only 4. This watered down our points so that the true impact was markedly diminished. Thus, I wanted to present the unedited version of our letter here so that further discussion can be had on the topic. Only through discourse can we maintain confidence in the research process and facilitate true evidence- based practice. However, our collective disbelief of these data rests on the collective experience of the authors of this letter, who have conducted more than 6. Lowery et al. As opposed to the often- observed heterogeneity in resistance training- induced hypertrophy, Lowery et al. What makes this more remarkable in that this was seen in a total of 1. HMB- FA+ATP). We are particularly nonplussed on this point since the sharp . And thus the difference is due, ostensibly, to two compounds (HMB- FA and/or ATP), which have been studied previously and resulted in a trivial training- induced adaptive advantage (1. Would the authors be willing to share subjects’ individual data? We ask since the mean gain in lean body mass in the supplemented group was ~8. This is also an astounding gain of lean body mass when one considers that the subjects were previously resistance- trained and so would have had less propensity to gain lean body mass (1. We could not ascertain the absolute values for the beginning and final values for body composition and so readers would have to make assumptions (since the reported data were incomplete and given as percentages) as to how much body composition changed. Would the authors be willing to present these data? We are aware of a previous letter from Hyde et al. Thus, our concern is clearly shared by others and, given the number and research experience of the authors on this letter, quite widespread. Importantly, however, a number of studies discussed by Lowery et al. Thus, while . Further, what is revealing is the astonishing performance differences reported by Lowery et al. That is, why did HMB- FA+ATP impart an astonishing ? It is important to understand the limitations of dual- energy x- ray absorptiometry (DXA), which derives by difference fat- and bone- free mass, which is a variable that is not equivalent to muscle (6, 1. The limitations of DXA and ultrasound, the two muscle- based outcome measures have been clearly outlined in a recent review (6). As stated, DXA “Cannot specifically discern skeletal muscle mass . For ultrasound, “Technical skill required. Excess transducer pressure and orientation can influence muscle size measurements. Identification of reproducible measurement sites critical. Care needed to make sure muscle is in relaxed state. Conditions such as proximity to exercise bout, hydration, are important to control” (6). Lowery et al. It would be useful for readers if Lowery et al. In the response to Hyde et al (7) Lowery et al. Can the authors please detail the screening process describing how many subjects were recruited and screened, final entered the study, and dropouts, to reach this number of subjects meeting these criteria and who completed the protocol? Please also clarify if the subjects were randomised to treatment and placebo groups or pair matched based on body mass, lean body mass, strength or other variable. The only form of HMB for which there is plausible data showing a mechanistic underpinning for its potential role aiding in muscle protein turnover is for calcium- HMB (1. We are unaware of any similar proof- of- principle mechanistic data for the free acid form of HMB despite apparently greater bioavailability and uptake (into what tissue is unclear) (4). Do the authors know of any data showing that HMB- FA has a similar credible effect as calcium- HMB on human muscle protein turnover (1. We note that leucine had the same anabolic effects as calcium- HMB (1. We also note that dietary protein can exert a positive effect on gains in muscle mass with resistance training (1) and yet the placebo group did not appear to respond at all to the overreaching phase. As another ingredient of the supplement used by Lowery et al (1. ATP would appear to be, given an extraordinarily low bioavailability (2), to be unusable. However, we note that Wilson et al. This seems to us highly improbable given that oral ATP even up to doses of 5. Thus, as opposed to an inconsequential increase in post- exercise blood flow induced by the ATP (8) in the HMB- FA+ATP supplemented group, we find it biologically implausible that 4. ATP would exert any effect on processes leading to enhanced performance let alone hypertrophy. What is remarkable is that given the expert dietary advice and total protein intake of the subjects studied, the optimal training program, and . Moreover, that these differences are statistically significant in such a small sample of subjects and ascribed to an, as yet, mechanistically untested form of HMB and a biologically unavailable quantity of ATP. We ask, in accordance with all reasonable guidelines regarding full disclosure of potential conflicts of interest now in place at many journals (including the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research – http: //journals. This is not an accusation and we fully accept that neither Dr. Wilson nor Mr. Lowery may have ever received such support, but believe this is an honest and reasonable question to ask on both scientific and ethical grounds (5) and it is standard practice to make such disclosures. Following extended phases of (primarily sea- or river- borne) exploration, expansion and settlement, Viking (Norse) communities and polities were established in diverse areas of north- western Europe, European Russia, the North Atlantic islands and as far as the north- eastern coast of North America. This period of expansion witnessed the wider dissemination of Norse culture, while simultaneously introducing strong foreign cultural influences into Scandinavia itself, with profound developmental implications in both directions. Popular, modern conceptions of the Vikings—the term frequently applied casually to their modern descendants and the inhabitants of modern Scandinavia—often strongly differ from the complex picture that emerges from archaeology and historical sources. A romanticised picture of Vikings as noble savages began to emerge in the 1. Viking revival. Current popular representations of the Vikings are typically based on cultural clich. During the 2. 0th century, the meaning of the term was expanded to refer not only to seaborne raiders from Scandinavia and other places settled by them (like Iceland and the Faroe Islands), but secondarily to any member of the culture that produced said raiders during the period from the late 8th to the mid- 1. As an adjective, the word is used to refer to ideas, phenomena, or artefacts connected with those people and their cultural life, producing expressions like Viking age, Viking culture, Viking art, Viking religion, Viking ship and so on. The period from the earliest recorded raids in the 7. Norman conquest of England in 1. Viking Age of Scandinavian history. The Normans were descended from Vikings who were given feudal overlordship of areas in northern France—the Duchy of Normandy—in the 1. In that respect, descendants of the Vikings continued to have an influence in northern Europe. Likewise, King Harold Godwinson, the last Anglo- Saxon king of England, had Danish ancestors. Two Vikings even ascended to the throne of England, with Sweyn Forkbeard claiming the English throne from 1. Cnut the Great becoming king of England from 1. The Greenland settlement eventually died out, possibly due to climate change. Traditionally containing large numbers of Scandinavians, it was known as the Varangian Guard. The word Varangian may have originated in Old Norse, but in Slavic and Greek it could refer either to Scandinavians or Franks. The most eminent Scandinavian to serve in the Varangian Guard was Harald Hardrada, who subsequently established himself as king of Norway (1. There is archaeological evidence that Vikings reached Baghdad, the centre of the Islamic Empire. Important trading ports during the period include Birka, Hedeby, Kaupang, Jorvik, Staraya Ladoga, Novgorod, and Kiev. Generally speaking, the Norwegians expanded to the north and west to places such as Ireland, Scotland, Iceland, and Greenland; the Danes to England and France, settling in the Danelaw (northern/eastern England) and Normandy; and the Swedes to the east, founding Kievan Rus'. Among the Swedish runestones mentioning expeditions overseas, almost half tell of raids and travels to western Europe. According to the Icelandic sagas, many Norwegian Vikings also went to eastern Europe. In the Viking Age, the present day nations of Norway, Sweden and Denmark did not exist, but were largely homogeneous and similar in culture and language, although somewhat distinct geographically. The names of Scandinavian kings are reliably known only for the later part of the Viking Age. After the end of the Viking Age the separate kingdoms gradually acquired distinct identities as nations, which went hand- in- hand with their Christianisation. Thus the end of the Viking Age for the Scandinavians also marks the start of their relatively brief Middle Ages. Viking expansion. The Viking experience throughout the north Atlantic was mainly about settlement with Iceland quickly becoming its most important colony. It is believed Iceland was colonised circa 8. Landnamark not recorded until 1. It wasn't until later in their history that they began to settle in other lands. This expansion occurred during the Medieval Warm Period. Their realm was bordered by powerful cultures to the south. Early on it was the Saxons, who occupied Old Saxony, located in what is now Northern Germany. The Saxons were a fierce and powerful people and were often in conflict with the Vikings. To counter the Saxon aggression and solidify their own presence, the Danes constructed the huge defence fortification of Danevirke in and around Hedeby. The Saxon defeat resulted in their forced christening and the absorption of Old Saxony into the Carolingian Empire. Fear of the Franks led the Vikings to further expand Danevirke, and the defence constructions remained in use throughout the Viking Age and even up until 1. The Vikings—led by King Gudfred—destroyed the Obotrite city of Reric on the southern Baltic coast in 8. AD and transferred the merchants and traders to Hedeby. One common theory posits that Charlemagne . England suffered from internal divisions and was relatively easy prey given the proximity of many towns to the sea or to navigable rivers. Lack of organised naval opposition throughout Western Europe allowed Viking ships to travel freely, raiding or trading as opportunity permitted. The decline in the profitability of old trade routes could also have played a role. Trade between western Europe and the rest of Eurasia suffered a severe blow when the Roman Empire fell in the 5th century. The Jutes invaded the British Isles three centuries earlier, pouring out from Jutland during the Age of Migrations, before the Danes settled there. The Saxons and the Angles did the same, embarking from mainland Europe. The Viking raids were, however, the first to be documented in writing by eyewitnesses, and they were much larger in scale and frequency than in previous times. This period of energetic activity also had a pronounced effect in the Scandinavian homelands, which were subject to a variety of new influences. Towns appeared that functioned as secular and ecclesiastical administrative centres and market sites, and monetary economies began to emerge based on English and German models. Foreign churchmen and native elites were energetic in furthering the interests of Christianity, which was now no longer operating only on a missionary footing, and old ideologies and lifestyles were transforming. By 1. 10. 3, the first archbishopric was founded in Scandinavia, at Lund, Scania, then part of Denmark. The assimilation of the nascent Scandinavian kingdoms into the cultural mainstream of European Christendom altered the aspirations of Scandinavian rulers and of Scandinavians able to travel overseas, and changed their relations with their neighbours. One of the primary sources of profit for the Vikings had been slave- taking. The medieval Church held that Christians should not own fellow Christians as slaves, so chattel slavery diminished as a practice throughout northern Europe. This took much of the economic incentive out of raiding, though sporadic slaving activity continued into the 1. Scandinavian predation in Christian lands around the North and Irish Seas diminished markedly. The kings of Norway continued to assert power in parts of northern Britain and Ireland, and raids continued into the 1. Scandinavian rulers were now directed toward new paths. In 1. 10. 7, Sigurd I of Norway sailed for the eastern Mediterranean with Norwegian crusaders to fight for the newly established Kingdom of Jerusalem, and Danes and Swedes participated energetically in the Baltic Crusades of the 1. Since then, most bodies have lost the knack for burning ketones, which is too bad because our sugar- craving brains would be content with a lot less sugar if our bodies remembered how to supply our brains with ketones. On a ketogenic diet, dietary carbohydrates are kept very low, protein is moderate and fat consumption is increased, gently encouraging our body to remember how to rely on fat as a primary fuel and to produce ketones from stored body fat. Even if you are very lean, you have lots more stored body fat, to use in ketone production, than you have stored carbohydrate fuels. Yes, the ketogenic diet is a high fat diet, not the high protein diet which is often portrayed. He has grown into a strapping young man who unfortunately developed grand mal seizures that homeopathy was not controlling. A trip to the neurologist yielded a prescription for a medication that controlled his seizures but left him nearly asleep. We put him on a ketogenic diet (a gentle one, and his “monitoring” was not by blood tests but by seizure count) that significantly reduced his seizure frequency and severity and enabled us to reduce his prescription to a “homeopathic” amount.
